He had fought with the Spanish army in Morocco and was with Pedro II at the siege of Uruguaiana, in 1865. Appointed on 22 March 1869, he took command at Luque on 16 April, at the age of 27. He directed the Cordillera campaign, with Piribebuy and Acosta Ñu, and the pursuit of López to Cerro Corá. He returned to Rio de Janeiro on 29 April 1870.
‡ Disputed. At Piribebuy, according to Centurión, he ordered the throats of commander Pedro Pablo Caballero and the political chief Patricio Marecos to be cut; Doratioto takes the order as fact and Maestri doubts it. The accusation that he had the field at Acosta Ñu burned with the wounded on it comes from the writer Julio José Chiavenato, without supporting documents.
