Uruguay sent a small division under the command of Venancio Flores. In the field everyone wore an almost identical drill uniform, and each unit was told apart by the color of its headgear. The Florida was commanded by León de Palleja, who wrote dozens of letters from the front to the Montevideo newspapers and died at Boquerón on 18 July 1866. At Tuyutí, Flores's Uruguayans were in the vanguard and took the first Paraguayan blow.
