Official Heroes’ Day ceremony

The valley, surrounded by hills and woods, was López’s last camp. Since 1976 it has been a national park: it protects the forest and the site of the battle of 1 March 1870. A trail of about 300 meters runs through the places of memory, with memorial headstones for the Marshal and Panchito and a large white cross. Every 1 March, Heroes’ Day, the official ceremony is held there.

‡ Disputed. The headstones are memorials: it is not known for certain where the remains of López and Panchito ended up, and most of the historians consulted doubt that the remains taken to the Panteón de los Héroes in 1936 are the Marshal’s.
