She met Francisco Solano López in Paris in 1854 and traveled with him to Paraguay. During the war she accompanied the Marshal on campaign until the end. At Cerro Corá, on 1 March 1870, she held the body of her son Panchito and managed to bury father and son. Exiled, she died in Paris almost forgotten.

In 1961 the Paraguayan government repatriated her remains. In 2025 Congress approved granting her posthumous honorary Paraguayan nationality and moving her urn to the Panteón de los Héroes; by mid-2026 the transfer was still pending, for lack of space.

‡ Disputed.Date of death: 25 or 27 July 1886. Children: six or seven, one of whom died in childhood. Burial of López and Panchito: with her own hands, according to tradition; in a grave dug by Brazilian sappers, according to Maestri. Her figure is still debated: O’Leary’s revisionism and the Stroessner government championed her memory.
